Captain America and Drugs

Posted by: pspteacher on: December 4, 2008

Polite Dissent is a great blog, which deals with medicine in comic books and television. PSA or Public Service Announcements are an American feature which can be found in advertings on televison, magazines and comics. They can deal with a whole host of issues.

PSA Comics can be used to introduce difficult topics to youger student. The stories can be somewhat hamfisted. Click the Polite Dissent link below for the rundown of this Captain America story for a good example. I would recommend these issues to parents and teachers. There are one page PSAs in comics which feature superheroes and young people in “situations”.

These PSAs can also be used in any classes dealing with social issues and advertising. (General Studies, Sociology etc) I will be linking to more PSAs in the future. See more of Scott’s Polite Dissent PSA posts

Monday PSA: Captain America Goes to War Against — Drugs!
It all starts when Captain America receives a note from Keith, a member of his Teen Brigade. Keith plays on his high school baseball team and is concerned about the team’s star pitcher Mitch. Recently, Mitch has started performing poorly, wheezing, and acting very anxious. Keith also tells Cap that he saw a strange man on a street corner giving something to Mitch, but Mitch wouldn’t tell him what it was. Keith is worried about Mitch and asks Captain America to check it out, especially with the big state championship game coming up.
